How ACT Scores Are Calculated
1. Section Scores: Each of the four sections (English, Math, Reading, Science) is scored between 1-36 based on the number of correct answers.
2. Composite Score: The average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.
3. Writing Test (Optional): Scored separately between 2-12 and doesn’t affect your composite score.

Note: This calculator provides an estimate. Official scores may vary slightly due to ACT’s scaling process.

What Is the ACT Composite Score?

The ACT (American College Testing) exam is made up of four sections:

  • English
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Science

Each section is scored from 1 to 36. Your composite score is simply the average of these four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.

Composite Score = (English + Math + Reading + Science) / 4

For example, if you scored 28 in English, 30 in Math, 25 in Reading, and 27 in Science:
(28 + 30 + 25 + 27) / 4 = 27.5 → Composite Score = 28

What’s a good ACT score?
A score of 21 is the national average. Scores above 30 are considered excellent and can boost chances at top-tier universities.

No — this calculator uses scores from a single test date. Superscoring (combining highest section scores from multiple test dates) is handled by colleges individually.
